  17.     I.  Introduction

  20.     This disk contains Part A of Hewlett-Packard's DeskJet Series v2.1
  21.     printer driver for Microsoft Windows 3.0 for the HP DeskJet 500 and
  22.     DeskJet 500C.
  23.  
  24.     This driver supports color, greyscale, and black and white printing. It
  25.     does not support internal printer fonts, font cartridges, or soft
  26.     fonts. To access these fonts, use the HP DeskJet Family driver instead.
  27.     The HP DeskJet Series V2.1 Microsoft Windows 3.0 driver is a graphics
  28.     data-based driver, and as such, converts all information sent to the
  29.     printer to graphics data. If you are printing documents that contain
  30.     mostly text and would like the ability to improve your printer's
  31.     performance, you may wish to print those files with the HP DeskJet
  32.     Family printer driver.

  34.     The following issues in the HP DeskJet Series V2.0 driver have been
  35.     addressed by the HP DeskJet Series V2.1 driver:

  37.       - UAE's or system hangs with 286 machines
  38.       - Full justification problems in some word processing applications
  39.  
  40.     DeskJet 500 owners may be interested in the HP DeskJet Series V2.1
  41.     driver as it offers the following enhancements over the DeskJet 500
  42.     Scalable driver:

  44.       - Enhanced error detection
  45.       - Additional greyscale options
  46.  
  47.     This driver is accompanied by three scalable fonts: CGTimes, Universe
  48.     and Courier. All three fonts are scalable from 4 point to 127 point
  49.     size at full resolution either in portrait or landscape orientation.

  51.     The file README.TXT included with the file D5WN3A.ZIP contains
  52.     additional information about the HP DeskJet Series v2.1 printer driver.

  55.     System Requirements
  56.  
  57.     A 80286 processor or greater is required to use the HP DeskJet Series
  58.     V2.1 printer driver for Microsoft Windows 3.0.

  61.     Memory Recommendations

  63.     The HP DeskJet Series V2.1 printer driver for Microsoft Windows 3.0 was
  64.     designed to work with supported Windows 3.0 system configurations.

  66.     For Black Only print mode using the Standard Black Blending method, 1
  67.     Mb (640 Kb conventional memory with 384 Kb extended memory) or more
  68.     memory is recommended.

  70.     For Black Only Print Mode using either the Greyscale Pattern or the
  71.     Greyscale Scatter Black Blending method, 2 Mb (640 Kb conventional
  72.     memory with 1408 Kb extended memory) or more memory is recommended.

  74.     For Color/Composite Black Print Mode, 2 Mb (640 Kb conventional memory
  75.     with 1408 Kb extended memory) or more memory is recommended.

  78.     Disk Requirements

  80.     The HP DeskJet Series V2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft Windows 3.0
  81.     requires approximately 2 1/2 Mb of free disk space for installation of
  82.     the driver and the three printer fonts that come with it.

  92.     Only a portion of the files required to install the DeskJet Series v2.1
  93.     printer driver are included here.  Once all of the files have been
  94.     unarchived, they will occupy two high density diskettes.  The entire
  95.     DeskJet Series v2.1 printer driver is contained in the following four
  96.     files:

  103.     The files required for installation of the driver depend on whether you
  104.     have access to the HP DeskJet Series V2.0 driver disks (these disks
  105.     ship with the DeskJet 500C).

  107.      - If you have access to the HP DeskJet Series V2.0 driver disks, copy
  108.        the following files contained in D5WN3A.ZIP to the HP DeskJet Series
  109.        V2.0 driver disk #1:

  113.                     OEMSETUP.INF
  114.                     README.TXT

  116.        Once you have copied these files to disk #1, you can install the
  117.        driver as per the instructions in the INSTALL.DOC file.

  119.      - If you do not have access to the HP DeskJet Series V2.0 driver
  120.        disks, download all four of the following .ZIP files and follow the
  121.        instructions in the Disk Preparation section below. The DeskJet
  122.        Series v2.1 printer driver files must be copied to two high density
  123.        disks by running the batch file DJDISK.BAT before the program can be
  124.        installed. The program is then installed from the disks created by
  125.        DJDISK.BAT.

  134.     III. Disk Preparation

  137.     NOTE: If you have access to the HP DeskJet Series v2.0 driver disks
  138.           that ship with the DeskJet 500C, disregard this section and see
  139.           the Contents section above for installation instructions.

  142.     The batch file DJDISK.BAT will create two DeskJet Series v2.1 printer
  143.     driver disks.  Once these disks have been created, you will install the
  144.     driver from these disks.
  145.  
  146.     The DeskJet Series v2.1 printer driver installation program expects to
  147.     find files on the appropriate diskette. The batch file DJDISK.BAT will
  148.     create the diskettes and copy the appropriate files for you
  149.     automatically.
  150.  
  151.     Before you begin you will need two blank high density, 5.25" or 3.5"
  152.     formatted diskettes.
  153.  
  154.     To create the DeskJet Series v2.1 printer driver diskettes:
  155.  
  156.     1) Make a temporary subdirectory on your hard disk (ie C:\TEMP) and
  157.        change to that directory.
  158.  
  159.     2) Copy the following archived files to the temporary subdirectory:

  161.                         D5WN3B.ZIP
  162.                         D5WN3C.ZIP
  163.                         D5WN3D.ZIP

  165.     3) Unarchive all of the files.

  167.     4) Type DJDISK and press <Enter>.  Follow the instructions on the
  168.        screen.  You will be prompted to put the blank, formatted disks in
  169.        Drive A:. The DeskJet Series v2.1 printer driver files will
  170.        automatically be copied to these disks.

  172.     5) Once the DeskJet Series v2.1 printer driver disks have been
  173.        prepared, follow the installation instructions in the INSTALL.DOC
  174.        file included with the file D5WN3A.ZIP.
